Frequently Asked Questions

How long are the therapy sessions?

Individual therapy sessions are 50 minutes long. Couples therapy sessions are either 50 minutes or 90 minutes long.

How often should I have therapy?

Therapy sessions are scheduled weekly, generally on the same day and at the same time. Sessions less frequent than weekly are not offered, as this tends to reduce the effectiveness of the therapy.

How long do I need to be in therapy?

This is unique to every person. Some people find that a few weeks of therapy benefit them, while others prefer to be in therapy over several years. It is helpful to consider what you would like to gain from the therapeutic journey.

When should I come for couples therapy?

Couples therapy can be helpful at any stage of a relationship, not only during crisis. You might consider coming when you want to strengthen your relationship, your communication breaks down, your conflicts feel repetitive or unresolved, emotional distance grows between you and your partner or if you are navigating major life transitions like getting married, parenting, relocation or loss. I use Gottman Method Couples Therapy, a research-based approach that helps partners improve communication, manage conflict and build a stronger emotional connection.

How does couples therapy work?

At the beginning of the therapy process, we will engage in a structured assessment phase of 4 sessions: 1 joint session, 1 individual session each, 1 joint feedback session during which we will discuss the results of the assessment. In addition, you will be asked to complete a written task after the first session, as well as an online relationship questionnaire (cost: $39, payable directly online to the Gottman Institute). The information gathered during this thorough assessment process, along with your stated goals, will guide our therapy plan moving forward.

What are the benefits of online therapy?

Online therapy is convenient for most people, as it cuts out travelling time to and from the therapist’s office. This is often helpful for individuals and couples with demanding schedules, those who travel for work or people with mobility issues. It also means that your options of therapists are not restricted by your location. This can be especially helpful for people living in remote or rural areas. For many people having therapy in their own home or office allows them to have a sense of privacy and to feel safe and comfortable in their own space.

It is important to note that online therapy is not suitable for clients experiencing active suicidal ideation, self-harm risk or requiring emergency intervention.

Do you claim from Medical Aid?

This practice is contracted out of medical aids. I will ask you to pay for the therapy session at the time of the session by EFT and at the end of the month I will send you a statement that can be sent to medical aid for reimbursement.
