So, what is this thing called ‘Gottman Method Couples Therapy’?

Gottman Method Couples Therapy is a research-based approach to couples therapy developed by Drs. John and Julie Gottman. For more than 40 years, the Gottman’s have studied thousands of couples to understand what makes relationships thrive or break down. Their findings now form one of the most evidence-based models of couples therapy in the world.

The Gottman Method does not only focus on conflict but rather considers the entire relationship system. It helps couples strengthen friendship, manage conflict effectively and create shared meaning in their lives together. The goal in therapy is not to eliminate disagreements (which I tend to believe is impossible), but to help couples navigate them with greater understanding, respect and emotional safety.

What can you expect if you start Gottman Method Couples Therapy?

The couples therapy journey starts off with 4 assessment sessions, which includes questionnaires and structured conversations. This provides me with the information I need to understand your patterns of interaction and identify the strengths and challenges of your relationship. The therapy is then tailored to your unique relationship needs.

The key areas of focus in the couples therapy process tend to include:

  • Building a strong emotional connection and friendship
  • Improving communication and conflict management skills
  • Reducing harmful patterns such as criticism, defensiveness, contempt and stonewalling
  • Increasing trust, intimacy and emotional responsiveness
  • Creating shared goals, values and meaning

I appreciate Gottman Method Couples Therapy because it is practical, science-backed, collaborative and skill-based. It is suitable for you if you’re feeling disconnected, stuck in recurring arguments, navigating a life transition or wanting to strengthen an already solid relationship. You will learn concrete tools that you can use inside and outside of therapy, which leads to sustainable change.

By using the framework for Gottman Method Couples Therapy my aim is to provide you with the tools to make more constructive and more conscious relationship decisions. I would like you, as a couple, to leave fully equipped with the tools to constructively manage conflict and enhance your relationship satisfaction.
