Understanding Intuitive Eating
Intuitive Eating was developed by dietitians Evelyn Tribole and Elyse Resch. It is a non-diet, evidence-based framework, built on 10 principles that guide people back to eating in a way that honours physical and emotional health, without restriction. Intuitive eating helps you rebuild trust with your body. Instead of following external food rules or restrictive plans, you learn to listen to internal cues, like hunger, fullness, satisfaction and emotional needs. You start asking: What do I feel like eating? What would nourish me right now? Am I hungry or am I seeking to meet an emotional need, such as longing to feel less lonely, sad or distressed?
Many people find this approach deeply healing. Intuitive eating offers a way out of the shame and rigidity of chronic dieting, binge-restrict cycles, emotional eating and being at war with your body. It helps you develop a respectful, attuned relationship with food and your body. Often, struggles with food are not just about food; they’re about control, self-worth, trauma or unmet needs. Through intuitive eating, we can start to untangle these deeper layers in a compassionate way.
Intuitive eating is weight-inclusive. This means that it does not promote weight loss as a goal, but rather focuses on Health At Every Size (HAES). This may challenge a lot of what we have been taught about how bodies ‘should’ look, but for many people it is a significant step towards body respect and long-term health.
If you are tired of battling with food and your body, intuitive eating is a kinder and more compassionate way to make peace with food and reconnect with your body
